Asymmetric Research, a key contributor to the Wormhole interoperability protocol, has unveiled a significant vulnerability affecting the Cosmos blockchain ecosystem, posing a potential risk of more than $150 million.

The security firm, responsible for identifying the flaw termed as a "reentrancy vulnerability," promptly notified the Cosmos development team, leading to swift remediation measures before any malicious exploitation could occur.

"We privately disclosed the vulnerability through the Cosmos HackerOne Bug Bounty program and the issue is now patched," stated Asymmetric. "No malicious exploitation took place and no funds were lost."

Jessy Irwin, CEO of Amulet, engaged by the Interchain Foundation for overseeing the bug bounty program and security coordination across the Cosmos ecosystem, affirmed the reporting of the issue and the subsequent issuance of an advisory notice.

The significance of this discovery lies in it being the first instance of a reentrancy vulnerability within the Cosmos ecosystem, renowned for its reliability and security in blockchain technology. The vulnerability was identified in ibc-go, a critical component utilized by various Cosmos chains, including the Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC), facilitating seamless communication and asset transfers between blockchains.

"While this vulnerability has existed in ibc-go since the beginning, it only became exploitable due to recent developments in the Cosmos SDK ecosystem," explained Asymmetric in a blog post. The exploitability arose with the introduction of "IBC middleware," powered by CosmWasm, enabling token utilization across interconnected blockchains.

Jonathan Claudius, CEO of Asymmetric and former security chief at venture firm Jump Crypto, emphasized the imperative for intensified research into cross-chain security risks. He underscored the necessity of neutralizing such threats to safeguard the integrity of the digital economy, reaffirming Asymmetric's commitment to identifying and mitigating existential risks in the multichain ecosystem.
