This innovative solution aims to tackle the challenge of efficient state management, which has been identified as a key barrier to widespread adoption of blockchain technology globally. By leveraging a specially crafted storage stack, Firewood aims to reduce the overhead associated with updating, storing, and pruning the Merkleized state, thereby improving overall performance and scalability.

Traditionally, blockchain projects have relied on various Tree data structures to store blockchain states efficiently, facilitating fast comparison of results and secure data synchronization among distrustful peers. However, the use of Merkle Tries in these projects has posed theoretical challenges, particularly regarding the management of heavy workloads.

Firewood represents a significant departure from conventional approaches by offering a new database solution designed to replace existing key-value embedded databases like LevelDB and RocksDB, as well as Merkle Trie, while efficiently storing and retrieving Merkleized blockchain states even under high loads. By storing the active state on disk and utilizing Merkle Trie for data indexing, Firewood aims to optimize performance and minimize overhead associated with disk I/O, size, and data serialization.

In the future, Ava Labs plans to introduce a series of reproducible milestones for Firewood, positioning it to compete with other blockchain databases such as MerkleDB. Firewood and MerkleDB will share a compatible Merkle Trie layout to enable seamless interchangeability in case of re-genesis. The ultimate goal is to integrate Firewood into all virtual machines, with ongoing development efforts aimed at making Firewood widely accessible.
