Avalanche, the platform for decentralized applications (DApps), recently faced a significant technical issue affecting the block production of its proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain. Kevin Sekniqi, co-founder of Ava Labs, has suggested that the problem may be related to a recent influx of new transactions.

The disruption in Avalanche's main network block creation occurred on February 23rd at 12:02:27 pm UTC. The blockchain explorer showed that the final block on the P-Chain, X-Chain, and C-Chain networks had been recorded over an hour earlier. Following this, the organization issued an official warning regarding the halt in block finalization, and an investigation is currently underway.

Block creation is crucial for ensuring the smooth functioning and permanence of blockchain networks as it is responsible for validating and documenting transactions. Any interruptions in this process result in delays in transaction processing, thereby affecting the overall functionality of the network.

Kevin Sekniqi announced in a post that a dedicated team is investigating the issue. He suggested that the disruption in block production could be related to a recent influx of new transactions that occurred just an hour before the problem arose.

Sekniqi suspects that the issue may be a rare bug associated with a specific situation, potentially involving a mempool handling issue with transactions. Despite the technical glitch, he reassured the community that the problem would be promptly addressed.

In a subsequent clarification, Sekniqi explained that the glitch was related to a code issue rather than performance handling, affirming that transactions may have encountered an edge case but did not impact performance. This is not the first time Avalanche has experienced disruption in block production; a similar incident occurred on March 23rd, 2023. Sekniqi had clarified at that time that the network instability was due to a bug in its v1.9.12, and a solution had been implemented to stabilize the network.
