Schor emphasized how these accounts align with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's vision for the network's future, particularly the transition to smart accounts.

Safe's journey began as an in-house multisignature wallet solution for the Ethereum sidechain Gnosis. Recognizing the lack of secure multisig options at the time, Gnosis built and open-sourced their solution, which quickly became the industry standard. This success story led to the creation of Safe, a standalone platform now serving as the go-to smart account infrastructure for various users.

The benefits of smart accounts extend far beyond enhanced security. They fundamentally improve the user experience by enabling a wider range of functionalities compared to traditional Ethereum wallets. Schor explains how these programmable accounts offer solutions to long-standing challenges, such as cross-chain interoperability and key management, ultimately simplifying user adoption.

Imagine seamless interactions with decentralized applications (DApps) by bundling multiple actions into a single transaction. Smart accounts offer this functionality through batch processing. The road to widespread adoption of smart accounts might be gradual. Years of user familiarity with externally owned accounts (EOAs) have created a landscape where most applications and wallets cater to this legacy system. However, Schor highlights the potential of layer-2 protocols to "start fresh" with smart accounts as the default option. Furthermore, EIP-7377, a recently proposed migration standard, could accelerate adoption by eliminating the need for wallets and DApps to cater to "legacy users."

Safe strategically targeted its initial user base towards those who would benefit most from the enhanced security and flexibility of smart accounts – Ethereum teams and Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). However, Schor has witnessed a gradual shift in adoption towards less technical and lower-value use cases. The deployment of six million smart accounts by Worldcoin serves as a testament to this broadening user base.

Looking ahead, 2024 could be a pivotal year for smart accounts. Schor anticipates a "tipping point" fueled by growing developer momentum, particularly with the rise of ERC-4337, a standard for integrating smart contracts with MetaMask wallets. Additionally, entire layer-2 protocols might switch to smart accounts as the default option.

New catalysts, such as major players like Coinbase adopting smart accounts, the development of cross-chain smart account functionality, and the implementation of EIP-7377, could significantly expedite the migration process. With these advancements on the horizon, the era of smart accounts on Ethereum seems closer than ever, unlocking a future of enhanced security, improved user experience, and wider accessibility for the entire blockchain ecosystem.
