Bhutan, a small kingdom renowned for its commitment to happiness and environmental conservation, is making headlines in the digital currency space. Partnering with Bitdeer Technologies, Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), Bhutan's investment arm, aims to significantly expand their Bitcoin mining operations. This move comes at a critical time, just before the anticipated Bitcoin halving event, which is expected to reduce mining rewards by half.

The Expansion Plan

The collaboration between DHI and Bitdeer is not new, but their latest project is by far the most ambitious. They plan to enhance their mining capacity sixfold, a leap that will see Bhutan's total mining capability rise to an impressive 600 megawatts by mid-2025. This upgrade is made possible by a substantial $500 million fund, previously announced by the partners. This fund is designed to not only bolster mining operations but also support blockchain technology using Bhutan’s sustainable energy resources.

Financial and Technological Synergy

Jihan Wu, Bitdeer’s chairman, emphasized the importance of leveraging Bhutan's green energy for blockchain technologies. This approach aligns with Bhutan's environmental ethos, using the nation's abundant hydropower to mine Bitcoin since 2019. At that time, the price of Bitcoin hovered around $5,000, marking the beginning of Bhutan’s journey into cryptocurrency. DHI's involvement in the crypto space became more apparent following revelations of their investments during the bankruptcy proceedings of Celsius and BlockFi. This move showcases DHI's broader strategy to diversify its portfolio, which is valued at over $2.9 billion, into the digital currency market.

Bitcoin Halving: A Challenge and Opportunity

The upcoming Bitcoin halving is a significant event that reduces the reward for mining new blocks by half. While this could potentially lower profitability for miners, Bhutan and Bitdeer view it as an opportunity. By increasing their mining capacity, they aim to offset the anticipated reduction in mining rewards. Experts like Laurent Benayoun, CEO of Acheron Trading, and Jimmy Zhao, a senior solution architect at BNB Chain, believe that the decrease in rewards could be compensated by rising network fees and the potential of Bitcoin-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Grayscale, a crypto asset manager, reported that Bitcoin Ordinals alone generated over $200 million in transaction fees for miners as of February 2024, highlighting the potential for alternative revenue streams post-halving.
