Last summer, excitement surrounding the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs bolstered its dominance relative to other cryptocurrencies. April saw Bitcoin's dominance peak at 52.86%, the highest level since April 2021, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East spurred a flight to safety, benefitting Bitcoin over its peers.

However, following this peak, Bitcoin faced increased competition from alternative assets like meme coins, while Ether enjoyed its own surge following the approval of spot ETFs on March 23. This dynamic led to a gradual erosion of Bitcoin's dominance over the market.

The recent resurgence in Bitcoin's dominance this past weekend represents its highest level since the start of the previous major bull market in April 2021. This resurgence comes despite recent price struggles, with Bitcoin down 5.3% over the past week, influenced by the Federal Reserve's indication of a single anticipated rate hike in 2024.

Despite Bitcoin's recent performance, many other tokens, particularly smaller ones with market caps over $1 billion such as FLOKI, STRK, IMX, and FIL, have experienced more pronounced declines in double digits over the same period.

Bitcoin's resilience during market downturns can be attributed to its perceived status as a less risky asset compared to many other cryptocurrencies. While Bitcoin is often categorized as a risk asset, some argue it serves as a safe haven due to its broader regulatory approval and institutional adoption relative to its peers.
