Core Scientific, a prominent Bitcoin mining company, has announced a 12-year agreement with cloud provider CoreWeave, marking a significant shift in its business strategy towards artificial intelligence (AI). This deal, which expands upon an existing partnership, is expected to generate over $3.5 billion in revenue, underscoring Core Scientific's commitment to diversifying beyond cryptocurrency mining.

CoreWeave, supported by Nvidia, specializes in renting out graphics processing units (GPUs) crucial for AI model training and operation. The company was valued at $19 billion in a recent funding round. Under this agreement, Core Scientific will supply approximately 200 megawatts of infrastructure to support CoreWeave's operations.

Diversification Amid Market Challenges

Core Scientific, which emerged from bankruptcy in January, has been involved in Bitcoin mining since 2017 and started diversifying its services in 2019. CEO Adam Sullivan, who took on his role during the company's bankruptcy period, has since focused on settling debts and expanding the company's non-Bitcoin business. Despite this progress, Core Scientific's market capitalization stands at around $865 million, significantly lower than its peak valuation of $4.3 billion in July 2021.

The demand for AI computing power surged following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, driving investments in AI models and startups. Bitcoin miners like Core Scientific, Bit Digital, Hive, Hut 8, and TeraWulf are now repurposing their facilities to cater to this new demand. James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, highlighted the competition for data center space between Bitcoin mining and AI activities, noting that AI operations require significantly higher capital expenditure but are more profitable.

Transition to AI Infrastructure

Core Scientific's pivot to AI is complex, given that high-performance computing (HPC) data centers have different requirements from Bitcoin mining facilities. Needham analysts noted that transitioning to HPC involves substantial upgrades to existing infrastructure. Core Scientific plans to convert 500 megawatts of its Bitcoin mining infrastructure to HPC data centers over the next three to four years, leveraging its control over its data center assets to manage this retrofit.

The company’s move is part of a broader trend among large Bitcoin miners to double their power capacity, including expansions into HPC. Clean energy, particularly nuclear power, is seen as a viable solution to meet the growing energy demands of AI and data centers. TeraWulf, for instance, uses nuclear energy for its mining sites and plans to expand into machine learning.

Strategic Synergies and Future Prospects

Core Scientific’s Sullivan emphasized the synergies between Bitcoin mining and AI operations, noting the company's access to large amounts of power and fiber lines across the U.S. The partnership with CoreWeave is expected to produce $290 million in annual revenue, contributing significantly to Core Scientific’s diversified business model and more stable cash flows.

As AI continues to evolve, the need for robust and energy-efficient data centers will only increase. Companies like Core Scientific, with their substantial infrastructure and strategic partnerships, are well-positioned to capitalize on this growing market. The move towards AI not only provides a new revenue stream but also mitigates the volatility associated with Bitcoin mining, promising a more balanced and resilient business model for the future.
