The VDD Multiple, a favored metric among crypto enthusiasts, recently surged above 4.0, a figure that historically indicates a potential nearing of the end of a bullish cycle. This uptick has prompted pseudonymous trader TXMC Trades to query their substantial following of 83,200 on April 10, pondering whether on-chain momentum has peaked.

Originating as a means to gauge instances of price overheating during major market cycles, the VDD Multiple measures the velocity of Bitcoin spending over time by multiplying the Coin Days Destroyed metric by the current BTC price. With its current reading standing at 3.03, having briefly spiked to 4.21 on March 28, and doubling since the start of the year from 2.04 on Jan. 1, according to GlassNode data, concerns regarding a potential market cooldown are on the rise.

Comparative data reveals that the last time the VDD Multiple exceeded 4.0 was in January 2021, coinciding with Bitcoin's valuation of $40,257. However, historical precedent suggests that such peaks don't always precipitate market downturns, as evidenced by Bitcoin's subsequent surge of 52.2% to $61,283 just two months later in March 2021.

The looming Bitcoin halving, now a mere nine days away, further amplifies these concerns, especially given the current VDD Multiple levels surpassing those observed in preceding halving events. Notably, the VDD Multiple stood at 0.419 and 1.606 in the lead-up to the 2016 and 2020 halvings, respectively.

Senior researcher CryptoVizArt at Glassnode attributes the recent surge in VDD Multiple levels to substantial outflows from Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), highlighting a trend of significant coin movement since January 10, coinciding with the approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. Since then, GBTC has shed a staggering $15.96 billion in assets, according to Farside data, with high fees relative to other Bitcoin ETFs further exacerbating the outflows.

Despite these warning signs, Bitcoin has experienced a remarkable 56% surge since the start of the year, climbing from $44,172 to its current price of $69,260.
