This metric has exhibited a steady decline since mid-April, reflecting shifting dynamics within South Korea's crypto landscape.

The Kimchi Premium phenomenon arises from the unique regulatory environment of South Korea's crypto market, which restricts foreign investors' access. Local investors engaging in arbitrage by purchasing significant amounts of crypto from foreign exchanges risk penalties under the country's Foreign Exchange Transactions Act. Consequently, South Korea's limited local supply of crypto often leads to a surge in demand, resulting in a wider premium gap.

In March, amidst heightened demand, the premium surged to a notable high of 11.44% following Bitcoin's record-breaking rally. However, the premium has since receded, mirroring a broader decline in trade volumes across South Korea's top five crypto exchanges—Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax—which collectively witnessed a combined trading volume of $2 billion in the past 24 hours, a stark contrast to the nearly $18 billion recorded on March 6, as per CoinGecko data.

Several factors have contributed to South Korea's waning enthusiasm for crypto in recent months. Geo-political tensions, such as the conflict in the Middle East, alongside continued net outflows in U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds, have dampened market sentiment. Additionally, the absence of significant events highlighting Bitcoin's value since the halving event last month has further subdued investor interest.

Despite these challenges, Bitcoin continues to exhibit resilience, trading around $63,018 at the time of publication, marking a 2.9% increase over the past 24 hours, according to data from The Block.
