These advancements, including BitVM, Spiderchains and Taproot Assets, have the potential to introduce new applications to Bitcoin and stimulate market demand for BTC.

BitVM, a pioneering computing model, enables the verification of Bitcoin computations, opening the door to smart contract functionality akin to Ethereum. Optimistic Bitcoin rollups, a key application of BitVM, facilitate fast and affordable transactions in off-chain environments before settling them on the Bitcoin network. Spiderchains, developed by Botanix Labs, are layer 2 chains secured by staked Bitcoin within decentralized multi-signature wallets. Users' pegged Bitcoin assets are safeguarded by a rotating subset of 100 "orchestrators" managing the layer 2 chain, which can incorporate various functionalities seen on other blockchains.

Babylon is expanding the Bitcoin "staking" landscape with its BTC re-staking technology. This innovation enables BTC holders to stake their coins and earn yield by utilizing them to secure other blockchain networks like Solana or Ethereum. Projects like Taproot Assets aim to bring tokenization, specifically stablecoins, to the lightning network, one of Bitcoin's most popular current L2s.

Grayscale believes that Bitcoin's underdeveloped smart contract ecosystem presents a substantial untapped market opportunity. While Ethereum's applications utilize 17% of its total market cap, the value locked in Bitcoin dapps is a mere 0.2% of its total market cap. If these emerging developments lead to increased adoption, it could imply a larger addressable market and potentially a higher market value over time.
