This marked the inaugural commercial transaction utilizing the pioneering cryptocurrency. The proposal to acquire pizzas using Bitcoin was shared by Laszlo on the renowned BitcoinTalk forum, five days before the actual purchase.

Fast forward to today, with Bitcoin hovering around $70,000, those two Papa John's pizzas would now be valued at over $700 million. A mere fourteen years ago, these same pizzas were priced at a modest $41. The worth of the Bitcoins expended on this pizza transaction is commonly referred to as the Bitcoin Pizza Index. To honor this groundbreaking event, the community annually observes Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22.

Beyond the realm of pizzas, in a 2019 interview with journalist Anderson Cooper, Hanyecz reflected on the substantial Bitcoin fortune he had once exchanged for just two pizzas. Besides these pizzas, Hanyecz delved into a plethora of other purchases using the original cryptocurrency. In total, he disbursed over 100,000 BTC on various acquisitions, potentially positioning himself as a significant Bitcoin whale had he retained the entirety of his holdings instead of engaging in early-stage commercial transactions.

While Bitcoin's proponents initially envisioned it as a primary mode of payment, its adoption for this purpose has been limited. Nonetheless, Bitcoin has flourished as a reliable store of value, attracting holders who anticipate price appreciation.
