BitFlyer Holdings, a leading name in Japan's cryptocurrency landscape, has embarked on a significant expansion by acquiring FTX Japan, the Japanese arm of the once-prominent crypto trading platform FTX. The acquisition includes the transfer of customer accounts from FTX Japan to BitFlyer, pending customer consent. Financial details reported by Nikkei indicate that BitFlyer committed billions of yen, amounting to tens of millions of dollars, to finalize the acquisition.

FTX Japan, previously known as Liquid before its acquisition by FTX in early 2022, underwent a tumultuous period following FTX's collapse in November 2022. Despite the challenges, FTX Japan assured its customers that their assets remained separate from FTX's bankruptcy proceedings and successfully resumed operations, including withdrawals, by February 2023.

FTX, under the leadership of Sam Bankman-Fried, had pursued an ambitious expansion strategy in 2022, highlighted by the acquisition of Voyager Digital for $1.4 billion. However, financial difficulties led to significant legal and financial repercussions, culminating in a $450-million settlement agreement with Voyager's debtors in April 2024.

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, also faced personal legal challenges, resulting in a 25-year prison sentence in the United States following his conviction on seven felony charges.
