In a landmark move, Circle, a leading issuer of stablecoins, has secured the first Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license under the European Union's new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework. This makes Circle's USDC and EURC stablecoins compliant with the new EU regulations, potentially paving the way for wider adoption of cryptocurrency across Europe.

Circle has chosen France as its European headquarters, citing the country's forward-thinking approach to digital asset regulation. "France's progressive stance on crypto and our existing relationship with the French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority (ACPR) were key factors in our decision," Allaire added.

MiCA, which came into effect in March 2024, establishes a comprehensive framework for regulating cryptocurrencies across the EU. The new regulations aim to create a level playing field for crypto businesses, protect consumers, and prevent financial crime.
