Coinbase, the renowned U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange, has devised a groundbreaking metric, the h-index, to provide a more precise evaluation of blockchain network adoption. This new metric aims to counteract distortions caused by airdrop-related activities and Sybil attacks, offering a comprehensive perspective on onchain adoption.

In a recent research report, Coinbase highlighted the proliferation of blockchain infrastructure investments, resulting in an abundance of blockspace and the emergence of decentralized applications. While this development has made onchain transactions more affordable and stimulated network growth, it has also posed challenges for analysts attempting to assess ecosystem adoption amidst a surge in application launches.

Conventional network metrics, such as total transactions and daily active addresses, often fall prey to manipulation by Sybil attacks and airdrop activities, leading to skewed assessments of adoption. To address this issue, Coinbase proposes the h-index, a metric that balances the depth and breadth of onchain adoption. The h-index quantifies the number of addresses receiving transactions from at least an equivalent number of unique sending addresses, offering a nuanced perspective on adoption trends.

For instance, an h-index of 100 signifies that 100 distinct receiving addresses have received transactions from at least 100 unique sending addresses within a specified timeframe. Coinbase's research findings indicate that Ethereum and Base networks exhibit the most widespread user activity, followed closely by Arbitrum and Polygon, when assessed using the h-index metric.

While acknowledging the metric's limitations, Coinbase believes that the h-index can provide valuable insights into comparative chain adoption by mitigating the disproportionate influence of Sybil attacks and offering a broader assessment of growth trends. However, challenges persist, including variations in blockchain execution environments and the potential distortion of data by exchange or smart contract wallets.
