Coinbase, the leading U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, has announced the integration of the Lightning Network, a groundbreaking layer 2 solution that promises to revolutionize Bitcoin transactions.

The Lightning Network, designed to enhance the speed and efficiency of Bitcoin payments, has now been seamlessly integrated into the Coinbase platform. This partnership with Lightspark, a prominent Lightning Network provider, allows Coinbase customers to instantly send, receive, and pay with Bitcoin using the Lightning Network directly from their Coinbase accounts.

Before the integration, Bitcoin transactions on Coinbase were processed on-chain, which could take up to two hours and incur high fees during peak network periods. The Lightning Network, however, operates on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, utilizing bidirectional payment channels to settle transactions off-chain. This results in near-instant transaction speeds and minimal fees, making Bitcoin more practical and accessible for everyday use.

Coinbase's protocol specialist, Viktor Bunin, has expressed his enthusiasm for this development, stating that the new integration will significantly boost Bitcoin's utility and availability worldwide, marking a significant milestone in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

To ensure a highly successful payment rate, Coinbase has introduced a small 0.1% charge for Lightning Network sends, which are completed in seconds. Additionally, initial withdrawal limits have been set at $2,000, with a fee cap of $2 per transaction. These measures may be adjusted based on user feedback and network liquidity.
