In a significant security incident, cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko has confirmed that its third-party email management platform, GetResponse, suffered a data breach. This breach, which occurred on June 5, allowed attackers to access and export the contact information of over 1.9 million CoinGecko users.

Breach Details and Immediate Actions

The breach was facilitated by a compromised employee account at GetResponse. CoinGecko received confirmation from GetResponse about the breach on June 6 at 11:58 AM UTC. The compromised data includes users' names, email addresses, IP addresses, locations of email opens, and other metadata such as sign-up dates and subscription plans. Importantly, CoinGecko clarified that user accounts and passwords remain secure and were not compromised in this breach.

"An attacker had compromised a GetResponse employee’s account, leading to a breach," stated CoinGecko in their June 7 announcement.

Phishing Emails and Ongoing Risks

Despite the main email domain of CoinGecko remaining uncompromised, the attacker managed to send 23,723 phishing emails. These emails were sent from another GetResponse client’s account (alj.associates) and targeted the extracted contacts from CoinGecko's account.

Phishing attacks typically aim to steal sensitive information, such as crypto wallet private keys, through deceptive emails. Address poisoning scams, a subset of phishing attacks, trick investors into sending funds to fraudulent addresses that closely resemble legitimate ones they have previously interacted with.

Hakan Unal, a senior blockchain scientist at on-chain security firm Cyvers, advised users to double-check the authenticity of emails and ensure they have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled on all crypto platforms to enhance security.

"The immediate concern is the risk posed to individuals who might receive these compromised emails. To stay safe, users should verify the authenticity of such emails and enable multifactor authentication on all crypto accounts," Unal told Cointelegraph.

"The biggest security concern right now is the rapid increase in losses due to private key leaks.
