CoinStats, a popular cryptocurrency portfolio tracker, suffered a major security breach that resulted in the theft of $2 million from nearly 1,600 user wallets, accounting for 1.3% of all hosted wallets. The attack, believed to be orchestrated by the North Korean hacking group Lazarus, exploited vulnerabilities in CoinStats' AWS infrastructure.

The incident began on June 22 when hackers targeted iOS users with fraudulent notifications promising rewards and redirecting them to a malicious drainer website through the CoinStats AirScout Wallet feature. The attack also involved in-app alerts on the home screen to promote the fraudulent site.

CoinStats has temporarily shut down its application and is working with law enforcement agencies and the Security Alliance to trace the stolen funds and restore operations. CEO Narek Gevorgyan assured users that no more than 1% were impacted and that the platform is committed to providing a detailed explanation of the incident.

However, the future of user compensation remains uncertain as CoinStats focuses on minimizing further damage and preparing for a thorough post-mortem analysis of the security breach.
