Colombian President Gustavo Petro is facing allegations of accepting a substantial illicit donation in cryptocurrency for his 2022 campaign.

According to local media reports, Petro received over $500,000 in digital tokens from a fraudulent crypto project called Daily COP. This donation was made in February 2022, during a meeting between Daily COP co-founder Sebastián Betancourt and Petro's then-campaign manager Ricardo Roa.

Omar Hernández, a former contractor for Daily COP, revealed that the donation was discussed during the meeting, along with the potential benefits of cryptocurrencies as an alternative to traditional banking. Hernández claimed that the meeting aimed to form a partnership or alliance between the government and the crypto project.

This allegation is the latest in a series of campaign-related controversies surrounding President Petro's short presidency. Last year, an investigation was launched into alleged illicit financing of Petro's 2022 campaign by Colombia's attorney general's office. The scandal has raised questions about the role of cryptocurrencies in political donations and the need for greater transparency and regulation.
