The recent airdrop event of zkSync, a Layer-2 network focused on Ethereum zero knowledge (ZK), has sparked controversy in the crypto community. The event has been criticized for lacking sybil countermeasures, which has led to an unfair distribution of the zkSync (ZK) token. Mudit Gupta, the security chief of Polygon, pointed out that the airdrop event had almost no sybil filtering, making it easy for anyone who knew the criteria to exploit the system.

Adam Cochran, a partner at Cinneamhain Ventures, also expressed his concerns, stating that the eligibility criteria were easy to meet and did not effectively prevent sybil attacks. Nansen, a crypto analysis firm, clarified that they did not perform sybil countermeasures or advise on allocations for the ZK token distribution, but provided data on certain wallet segments.

The lack of sybil countermeasures has led to estimates suggesting that up to 135 million ZK tokens could be directed to sybil wallets, valued at around $52.3 million. The token has since dropped by 43% in value, coinciding with the announcement of the airdrop event details.

The controversy highlights the importance of implementing effective sybil countermeasures in airdrop events to prevent exploitation and ensure fair distribution. The incident also raises questions about the responsibility of crypto projects to protect their users from sybil attacks.
