Lithuania, once a haven for crypto businesses, is gearing up for a shakeup. The country plans to implement stricter licensing regulations next year, aiming to weed out less-than-reputable crypto firms from its thriving fintech scene.

Currently, Lithuania boasts a whopping 580 registered cryptoasset firms. However, according to central bank board member Simonas Krepsta, not all of them will make the cut. A rigorous licensing process, expected to wrap up by June 2025, will separate the diamonds from the rough, leaving only compliant companies standing.

This move stems from a realization that lax oversight has allowed some bad actors into the Lithuanian crypto space. "We've seen failures, embezzlement cases - a blow to the industry," Krepsta told Bloomberg.

Lithuania's reputation as a crypto-friendly nation stems from its previously unrestricted environment and streamlined business setup process. However, this open-door policy also attracted some unwanted attention.

The new licensing regime signifies a significant shift. It's not just a local initiative – Lithuania is aiming to get ahead of the curve before the European Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation comes into effect in early 2025.
