In a daring raid, South Korean police have apprehended 28 individuals suspected of masterminding a sophisticated crypto investment fraud ring that duped unsuspecting victims out of a staggering $1.3 million.

The Sting Operation

The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Crime Investigation Unit spearheaded the operation, detaining six key suspects and charging 22 others without detention. The investigation revealed that the group had been active from July to December last year, preying on approximately 50 victims with promises of astronomical returns on little-known cryptoassets.

The Scam Unfolds

Posing as crypto experts, the fraudsters lured victims onto a bogus trading platform, touting the potential for massive profits once these coins were listed on major exchanges. However, police discovered that these coins were, in fact, worthless and had never been listed on any reputable exchange.

The Web of Deceit

The ring's modus operandi was to pose as cryptoasset "experts" and "lure" victims onto the unregistered platform. They assured victims that their investments were safe and would yield "high profits" soon. But in reality, the gang was stealing investment stakes, leaving victims with nothing but empty promises.

A Complex Operation

The investigation uncovered a sophisticated operation, with the ring divided into a "sales team unit" and a "public relations team." The suspects now face charges including organized crime, with police continuing to investigate additional crimes related to the ring.

A Crackdown on Crypto Fraud

This bust is the latest in a series of crackdowns by South Korean authorities on bogus crypto exchanges. Courts have been handing down heavy sentences to convicted offenders, including an eight-year prison term for a fake XRP exchange operator and a 25-year sentence for the CEO of V Global, a fake crypto exchange that defrauded thousands of victims.
