Bybit, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has announced significant changes to its executive team following a botched airdrop that resulted in a $26 million compensation payout to affected users. The exchange confirmed that several executives have taken on new roles within the company, with a spokesperson stating that the changes are part of a regular business structure update aimed at placing the right people in the right positions.

The airdrop issue, which affected over 320,000 users, was attributed to system maintenance and high transaction volume, leading to delayed and lower trading prices for some users. Bybit's CEO, Ben Zhou, apologized for the incident and assured users that the exchange would conduct a thorough internal review to prevent similar issues in the future.

In a statement, Bybit explained that the airdrop was delayed due to system maintenance and an unusually high transaction volume: "Airdrops were distributed to users whose transactions occurred during the scheduled system maintenance. Hence, it took longer to reconcile all balances and reflect them accurately." The delayed distribution of tokens led to a lower trading price for those who received their tokens later. The balance issue affected 320,000 users, according to the exchange.

Bybit's restructuring comes as the exchange faces a challenging month. On May 22, Zhou dispelled rumors on X (formerly Twitter) that Bybit was insolvent or hacked. The rumors were largely based on a misinterpreted chart suggesting funds were being drained from the exchange's wallets. In response, Bybit shared its proof of reserves and data from a Nansen dashboard showing it holds more than 100% of all assets required to cover all deposits.

A few days before, on May 16, Bybit faced regulatory challenges in France. The Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) reiterated a warning that the exchange is blacklisted in the country.

BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has also increased its exposure to Bitcoin, with its funds purchasing shares of its spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the first quarter. Regulatory filings show that the company's investment funds bought shares of its own BTC in the first quarter. BlackRock's Strategic Income Opportunities Fund (BSIIX) snapped up $3.56 million worth of the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), while its Strategic Global Bond Fund (MAWIX) made a $485,000 purchase, according to May 28 Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Semler Scientific, a Nasdaq-listed company, has adopted Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset, purchasing 581 BTC for $40 million. The company's board of directors and senior management reportedly spent "substantial time" examining potential uses for its cash reserves, including evaluating acquisition opportunities. "After studying various alternatives, we decided that holding Bitcoin would be the best use of our excess cash," said Eric Semler, chairman of Semler Scientific, in a statement.

Riot Platforms, a Bitcoin mining firm, has made an offer to acquire Bitfarms, a smaller Canadian competitor, for around $950 million in cash and common stock. The move follows Bitfarms' internal management turmoil, including the recent dismissal and lawsuit of its former CEO.
