Prometheum, a prominent player in the digital asset trading and custody space, has recently unveiled its groundbreaking Ether (ETH) custody service. This innovative approach treats Ether as a security, a move that has generated significant buzz within the crypto community.

According to a recent report from Fortune, Prometheum has quietly launched its Ether custody solution on May 17, with a select group of companies. The firm plans to roll out the service on a larger scale in June, targeting asset management firms, hedge funds, banks, and registered investment advisors. Later this year, Prometheum aims to expand its services to retail clients as well.

The company's co-founder and co-CEO, Aaron Kaplan, made headlines last June when he testified before a United States House Committee. During his testimony, Kaplan expressed support for regulating cryptocurrencies under current securities laws, a stance that aligns with the views of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

In February, Prometheum announced its intention to treat Ether as a security when launching its custodial services. This decision sparked criticism from some members of the crypto community, but Kaplan believes it is a necessary step to ensure compliance with existing laws.

"It eliminates a lot of the arguments that things can't be done under existing laws," Kaplan explained. "It marks the first time that…an investment contract digital asset security is being custodied and treated under the securities laws."

The launch of Prometheum's Ether custody service has raised concerns about potential conflicts between the SEC and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CFTC has long classified Ether as a commodity, and in March, CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam warned that such a product would put U.S. financial market rules in direct conflict.
