A political action committee (PAC) dedicated to supporting candidates for federal office in the 2024 United States elections has reportedly raised an astonishing $102 million in funds. This impressive figure was revealed in a report from Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer rights advocacy group, on May 6th.

The report cites data from the nonpartisan transparency organization Open Secrets, which indicates that the Fairshake Super PAC and its two affiliates, Defend American Jobs PAC and Protect Progress PAC, have collectively amassed more funds than even Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' political action committee.

The Fairshake Super PAC, known for previously backing Republican candidates, has been responsible for launching attack ads targeting certain candidates, such as California Senate candidate Katie Porter, a Democrat. Conversely, the Protect Progress PAC has thrown its support behind Democratic candidates for congressional seats in Alabama and Texas, with the candidates Shomari Figures and Julie Johnson emerging victorious in their respective primaries and now set to face off against Republican opponents in November.

The substantial financial backing provided by these crypto-focused PACs underscores the growing influence of the cryptocurrency industry in the political arena. Major crypto firms, including industry giants like Coinbase and Ripple, have contributed to the fundraising efforts of Fairshake and its affiliates, recognizing the potential for crypto to be a decisive factor in tight electoral races. Moreover, Republican candidate John Deaton, considered a long-shot by many, has garnered significant support from the crypto community as he attempts to unseat the formidable Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Rick Claypool, a researcher at Public Citizen, emphasized the far-reaching implications of this influx of crypto-backed funding in a recent post on the social media platform X. "Eleven primary races that include crypto-backed candidates remain [in 2024]," Claypool stated. "Then it's onto the general election, where narrow majorities mean super PAC spending can tip congressional control."

The upcoming U.S. general election on November 5th will determine the winners of all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 34 seats in the Senate, and ultimately, the Presidency itself.
