The cryptocurrency market is booming, but with limited rules, it's a gamble for investors and a regulatory headache for the U.S. Enter Coinbase, a major crypto exchange, taking a stand against the old guard - the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Coinbase is throwing down the gauntlet, appealing to the U.S. Court of Appeals to force the SEC's hand. Why? Because the SEC, in Coinbase's view, is clinging to outdated regulations, trying to fit a square peg (crypto) into a round hole (centuries-old securities laws). This lack of clear rules, they argue, is stifling innovation and harming the industry.

Two recent Congressional resolutions challenged the SEC's authority and gave the green light to a bill that could shift some crypto oversight to a different agency. Even President Biden, initially cautious, may have to pick a side as crypto becomes a growing concern for voters.
