Crypto.com's highly anticipated entry into the South Korean market has hit a regulatory roadblock, with authorities raising concerns over potential money laundering risks associated with the platform's operations. The Singapore-based crypto exchange was initially slated to launch in South Korea on April 29 but has been forced to postpone its debut due to scrutiny from the country's financial regulators.

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) of South Korea, the nation's top financial regulator, found irregularities related to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) measures in the data submitted by Crypto.com during the licensing process. As a result, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), operating under the FSC's purview, promptly launched an "emergency on-site inspection" on April 23 to monitor the crypto exchange's activities closely.

An official from the FSC shed light on the situation, stating, "We found concerns related to the prevention of money laundering activities in the submitted materials." This revelation has cast doubt on Crypto.com's ability to meet South Korea's stringent AML compliance standards, leading to the temporary suspension of its launch plans.

Crypto.com had previously obtained a domestic virtual asset business license (VASP) in South Korea after acquiring a local crypto exchange named OKBit. However, the company now finds itself in a precarious position, forced to address the regulators' concerns and demonstrate the robustness of its AML measures before it can proceed with its Korean market entry.

In response to the regulatory scrutiny, Crypto.com acknowledged the delay and expressed its commitment to working closely with the authorities. A company spokesperson stated, "Korea is a difficult market for international exchanges to enter, but we are committed to working with regulators to advance the industry responsibly for Koreans."

The spokesperson further added, "We will postpone our launch and take this opportunity to make sure Korean regulators understand our thorough policies, procedures, systems and controls."

South Korea's financial authorities have adopted a strict stance on AML compliance within the crypto industry, emphasizing the need for robust measures to combat money laundering and other illicit activities. The upcoming regulations will require all foreign digital assets to publish a comprehensive white paper or technical manual for the South Korean market before being listed on domestic exchanges.

Additionally, tokens that have been involved in hacking incidents will face heightened scrutiny, and their listing will be contingent upon a thorough investigation into the root cause of the incident.
