Another area where blockchain could prove valuable is increasing transparency and traceability within the convoluted global pharmaceutical supply chain. Drug makers have embraced blockchain to track shipments and prevent the distribution of counterfeit medicines, which cause an estimated 1 million deaths per year according to Interpol.

"Blockchain's decentralized, immutable record could make it virtually impossible for counterfeit drugs to be injected into the legitimate supply chain without being detected," said Fred Jacobs, CEO of iSolve, a blockchain consultancy that works with life sciences companies.

Patient Data Markets

Perhaps the most futuristic — and controversial — idea for applying crypto to healthcare is creating cryptocurrency-powered markets that would allow patients to sell access to their anonymized medical data. Such a system could provide a new revenue stream incentivizing people to share data that could accelerate medical research while still protecting privacy.

Critics raise concerns about potential inequities, datsecurity risks, and rartifial obstacles to research if people start demanding high prices for their data. But proponents argue crypto-enabled data markets could divert profits from Big Tech data brokers back to the individual people generating the valuable information in the first place.

While still nascent,the intersection of crypto and pharma is an intriguing frontier that could fundamentally re-wire incentives and increase transparency across the healthcare ecosystem. As Dr. Jalabi concluded, "Blockchain is still in its early days in terms of healthcare applications, but it has incredible potential if stakeholders across the pharma world embrace crypto and prioritize scalable implementation strategies."
