Amid ongoing tensions between Gaza and Israel, Ethereum community member Kat has initiated an ETH-powered campaign aimed at evacuating local families to safety.

The campaign, dubbed "ETH Evacuations," has garnered over $55,000 in the past 24 hours to aid families seeking to leave the Gaza strip. This effort follows escalated fighting in the region, with Hamas-aligned militants breaching into Israel on October 7, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Led by Katalunia, formerly head of product at Zora, a creator-focused platform on the Ethereum network, the campaign was launched on March 10 through ethevacuations.xyz to facilitate direct ETH donations to Gaza families.

Since its inception, the campaign has gained momentum, with the crypto community actively supporting and spreading awareness. Kat herself has contributed to the cause and has been involved in various charitable initiatives following her visit to the troubled region in June 2023.

Kat notes that it costs approximately 1.5 ETH (around $5,000) for an adult and 0.5 ETH (about $2,000) for a child to safely cross the Gaza border via the Rafah crossing, the sole point of entry between Egypt and Palestine. These expenses, including "coordination fees," are covered by the campaign.

Initially assisting friends and colleagues in need of evacuation, Kat expanded the campaign to the broader community, successfully evacuating two families from harm by March 13.

Additionally, several NFT artists have pledged their support by listing collections to raise funds. For instance, troels_a launched the EVAC open edition project on Coinbase's base network, with proceeds contributing to the campaign. Similarly, 'brian is online' launched three NFTs and pledged to match all generated proceeds.

As of the latest update, the campaign, active for 3.5 weeks, has raised over $100,000 in ETH. Donations were received in multiple cryptocurrencies, indicating broader support beyond the Ethereum community.

The campaign highlights the transparency facilitated by blockchain technology, crucial for philanthropic endeavors, especially amid concerns of fraudulent activities in charitable causes.
