London's digital challenger bank, Kroo, is slamming the brakes on cryptocurrency transactions for its users. Citing a need to safeguard accounts and finances, the bank has updated its terms and conditions, effectively banning all crypto-related transfers and payments as of May 30th, 2024.

This move comes amidst a disconcerting rise in crypto scams plaguing the online world. Just recently, Lloyds Bank in the UK issued a stark warning about a 23% surge in crypto scams targeting young investors, with average losses exceeding £10,000 – the highest of any scam category.

Kroo isn't venturing into uncharted territory. They join a growing list of UK challenger banks, including Starling and Chase UK, who have implemented similar restrictions on crypto transactions. Starling enacted a ban in 2022 due to perceived "high-risk" associated with crypto activity, while Chase UK, the British arm of JPMorgan, followed suit last October, citing concerns over crypto's illicit use. Even established players like NatWest Bank have taken a cautious approach, limiting daily and monthly crypto spending for their customers.

However, the question lingers: is this an overreaction to the crypto world's woes? Unlike competitor banks who opted for limitations, Kroo's approach is a complete severing of ties. Regulatory hurdles might be another factor at play. Recent transparency regulations imposed by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have cast a shadow of doubt on the crypto market's trustworthiness.

Kroo's decision adds fuel to the fire of crypto's legitimacy concerns. As David Janczewski, CEO of blockchain security firm CoinCover, aptly pointed out during Chase's crypto ban, "robust safety measures" can address issues at their source, instead of alienating customers through a blanket ban.
