Cardano's sustainability lead, Alexandre Maaza, highlighted decentralized identity (ID) solutions as potentially the next breakthrough use case for blockchain technology, aiming to attract mainstream adoption during a panel discussion at Web3 Corporate Innovation Day.

Maaza emphasized that blockchain lacks robust, non-speculative applications capable of drawing in the next wave of users. He identified decentralized identity as a promising "killer" use case that could scale effectively across industries and individuals:

"At the Cardano Foundation, we see digital identity for people, products, data, and documents as a scalable killer application for Web3."

Decentralized IDs on Web3 platforms prioritize user privacy by minimizing the disclosure of sensitive personal data, ensuring information is stored locally in users' crypto wallets and can be withdrawn via seed phrases.

While acknowledging the current hype in cryptocurrencies driven by speculative investment, Maaza stressed the necessity for blockchain to pivot towards practical applications that resonate with a broader audience:

"Blockchain needs a non-speculative use case involving millions or even billions of individuals and assets, bringing technology to the forefront."

Justin Hyun, director of investments at Ton Foundation, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for straightforward applications with actual usability to onboard the next 500 million users:

"Our goal is to bring 500 million people onto blockchain by 2028, requiring user-friendly use cases that abstract complexity from the front end."

Despite not being a revenue-generating endeavor for most companies, decentralized ID solutions can mitigate costs associated with data breaches and offer significant value to businesses handling sensitive customer information:

"For many businesses, protecting customer data is a critical concern and a costly exercise when breached," explained Maaza.

Currently, various blockchain networks, including Cardano, are actively developing non-custodial digital identity wallets. Governments such as Istanbul are also exploring decentralized ID solutions like Omchain's proof-of-identity (PoI) to enhance data privacy without relying on traditional database queries during authentication.

As blockchain technology continues to evolve, decentralized identity stands poised to reshape digital interactions, ensuring privacy and security in an increasingly connected world.
