Cryptocurrency hacks decreased for the second month in a row, with criminals stealing approximately $79 million from decentralized finance projects in March.

This represents a 48% decline from the $160 million stolen in February.

Blockchain security company CertiK reported that a total of $79 million was lost to exploits, hacks, and scams in March, with $69 million being returned.

The highest losses were due to targeted exploits on protocols, totaling $52.1 million, followed by flash loan attacks and phishing incidents amounting to roughly $43 million. Exit scams also led to a loss of $5.7 million.

One of the biggest thefts in March was from Prisma Finance, which lost around $12.4 million in a flash loan attack. The hacker, who claimed to be a white-hat, promised to return the stolen funds after negotiations with the project's team.

Another significant incident was the $10 million stolen from NFPrompt, a content generation platform.

March also saw losses of around $4.7 million from the NFT Platform Remilia and $4.6 million from the Web3 gaming platform Super Sushi Samurai.

Despite the decrease in thefts, asset returns have increased significantly. Owners have reclaimed about $69.2 million, up from $7.8 million returned in February.

A noteworthy return was on the Ethereum layer-2 network Blast-based gaming platform Munchables, where the developer returned the $62 million stolen without demanding a ransom.
