The Dfinity Foundation has announced the launch of a new API, enabling Internet Computer (IC) smart contracts to read and write on any Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chain. This significant development was disclosed in a recent statement, marking a major step towards enhanced cross-chain interoperability.

Lomesh Dutta, Vice President of Growth at Dfinity Foundation, highlighted the benefits of this new API, stating, "Internet Computer smart contracts can now communicate with any EVM chain. This means dapps can benefit from cross-chain liquidity, merging communities, and simplifying the handling of API keys." He added that the initial integrations include Optimism, Arbitrum, and Base, with the flexibility for users to add other EVMs as needed.

This move builds on existing interoperability, as Internet Computer smart contracts have already been successfully integrated with Bitcoin and Ethereum through projects like Bioniq, Bitfinity, and Omnity. The API's introduction aims to further streamline interactions across various blockchain ecosystems.

The expansion is a key component of Dfinity Foundation's Chain Fusion initiative, which seeks to enhance the Internet Computer's ability to interact seamlessly with other blockchain networks. The foundation, which spearheads the development of the Internet Computer protocol, also announced plans to enable interactions with the Solana blockchain in the near future.

Dominic Williams, Chief Scientist and Founder of the Dfinity Foundation, emphasized the transformative potential of the Internet Computer. He described it as the "only third-generation blockchain capable of powering a new internet era where all online activity is completely on-chain."

The new API is set to revolutionize how decentralized applications (dapps) operate, offering unprecedented levels of cross-chain liquidity and integration. This advancement not only simplifies the technical complexity for developers but also paves the way for a more interconnected and fluid blockchain ecosystem, aligning with the broader vision of a seamless, on-chain internet.
