This development indicates a significant pivot as global financial systems adapt to the changing order. However, the Digital Euro faces an uphill battle, lacking unanimous support among EU legislators who question the need for a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

Amidst a worldwide trend where over 150 nations are developing CBDCs, only a handful have progressed to pilot stages as of 2023. The BRICS currency, backed by gold, may very well beat the digital Euro to the punch in the global market, posing a formidable challenge to Western financial dominance.

Brazil's President Lula da Silva's advocacy for a unified BRICS currency during the bloc's summit in August 2023 underscores a proactive measure against the volatility of US dollar exchange rates. While gaining momentum, this initiative must navigate complex hurdles to achieve fruition.

The West, especially the European Union, remains divided over embracing digital currencies, with skepticism about the Digital Euro's ability to counter the anticipated BRICS currency. Failure to present a unified front against the BRICS currency might leave Western economies at a disadvantage.

As Russia and China actively pursue de-dollarization by diversifying away from the US dollar and accumulating gold reserves, the planned BRICS currency, projected to debut at their 2024 summit, represents a strategic move to establish a new reserve currency. This bold step reflects not just an economic tactic but a geopolitical maneuver to diminish the dollar's global supremacy.
