How Digital Signatures Work

1. Key Pair Generation: Users generate a pair of cryptographic keys - a private key (known only to the owner) and a public key (shared openly). If you use digital wallets like Metamask and Trust Wallet, the 12 words that are generated when you create an account are your private keys. And your wallet address which you use for transactions is your public key.

When you want to carry out a cryptocurrency transaction, your private key is used to create a digital signature.

2. Verification: The public key as mentioned above is used to verify the digital signature's authenticity. A successful verification confirms that the transaction was signed by the owner of the private key. Then the transaction is processed.

3. Immutable Record Keeping: Digital signatures contribute to the immutability of blockchain records. Each transaction once signed, becomes resistant to changes and is time-stamped in the blockchain distributed ledger.
