Popular dog-themed meme coins Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) saw a spike in their prices on Friday following a tweet by Elon Musk about the death of Kabosu, the dog that inspired these tokens.

DOGE surged by 5% to a session high of 17.3 cents within minutes of Musk’s tweet, while SHIB increased by nearly 3%. Although the gains were short-lived and both cryptocurrencies reduced their spikes, DOGE still ended up 6% and SHIB 1% higher over the past 24 hours, outperforming the generally flat CoinDesk 20 Index.

This event highlights Musk’s significant influence over meme coins, with speculation continuing about his potential involvement as one of Dogecoin’s largest holders and the possibility of integrating DOGE into the X payment system.

Kabosu, the dog behind the Dogecoin meme and several other meme tokens, passed away early Friday at over 17 years old, according to a blog post by her owner.
