EigenLayer, the Ethereum restaking platform, has commenced its distribution of EIGEN tokens through an airdrop, known as Season 1, Phase 1 rewards. Users eagerly waiting for the release can now claim the new EIGEN token as per the recent blog post by the development team. It is essential to highlight that EIGEN tokens are currently nontransferable, suggesting that users cannot engage in selling or trading them. However, plans are in place for these tokens to become transferable in the future once new features are introduced by the development team in the upcoming months, with a target implementation date set for September 30.

In order to ensure users do not miss out on claiming their EIGEN tokens, it is crucial to seize the opportunity before the token claim process concludes on September 7. Any tokens left unclaimed beyond this date will not be distributed to users. In a bid to incentivize participation, users who engaged in restaking on EigenLayer between March 15 and April 29 can claim 100 bonus tokens immediately, with the bulk of their rewards scheduled for release in mid-June alongside other Phase 2 participants. However, the EIGEN airdrop has stirred mixed reactions within the decentralized finance (DeFi) community, with some hailing it as a potentially revolutionary move while others criticize aspects such as the ban on VPN servers, distribution of nontransferable tokens, and the perceived brevity of the snapshot period.

Meanwhile, in a bid to maintain fairness and exclude sybil farmers from benefitting unduly, LayerZero Labs—renowned for its cross-chain interoperability protocol— has pledged to take a proactive stance. The project aims to combat the presence of sybil farmers by conducting an internal investigation to weed them out from receiving any token allocations during upcoming events. Additionally, LayerZero Labs intends to introduce a reward scheme that grants a 10% bonus of the initial token allocation to bounty hunters who successfully identify and report on any additional sybil users. Following the completion of its first snapshot, the project is gearing up to distribute tokens to its early adopters in the latter part of 2024.
