The surge in open interest is attributed to a newfound optimism regarding the potential approval of a spot ether exchange-traded fund (ETF). ETF analysts have revised their outlook, with Bloomberg's James Seyffart and Eric Balchunas increasing the likelihood of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approving spot ether ETFs from 25% to 75%.

Reports indicate that the SEC has requested issuers to update and refile Form 19b-4 documents, a necessary step for the approval of spot ether ETFs. The approaching deadlines for the first round of spot ether ETF applications add further anticipation, with VanEck's deadline set for May 23 and Ark Invest/21Shares' for May 24.
