This ambitious proposal aims to bolster scalability and alleviate the burden of gas fees by relocating core functionalities from the Ethereum mainnet to a Layer 2 chain, as detailed by ENS Labs.

Although the specific stack or Layer 2 network for the migration has yet to be finalized, ENS Labs assures users that the chosen network will serve as the primary platform for all ENS-related interactions post-migration.

Beyond scalability and cost-effectiveness, the ENSv2 upgrade introduces a novel "hierarchical registry system" tailored for the streamlined management of .eth domain names. This groundbreaking system empowers nameholders with unparalleled control over their digital assets, offering robust capabilities for managing subdomains and configuring resolvers.

According to Nick Johnson, Lead Developer and Founder of ENS Labs, "ENSv2 will introduce a hierarchical registry system to .eth name management. Nameholders will have access to a unique name registry, where they will be able to manage subdomains and configure resolvers."

Since its inception, ENS has emerged as a cornerstone of the Ethereum ecosystem, providing users with the convenience of simplified .eth addresses in lieu of traditional Ethereum addresses. With over two million .eth names registered on the mainnet, the platform has become synonymous with user-friendly blockchain interactions.

Eskender Abebe, Head of Product and Strategy at ENS Labs, emphasized the pivotal role of Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4844 in catalyzing the ENS upgrade. "The release of EIP4844 has made Layer 2 networks based on Ethereum vastly more affordable and scalable, which was a big driving factor for ENS’s proposal," Abebe noted.
