In a recent communication on X, Szilágyi expressed concerns about the Ethereum ecosystem's heavy usage of Geth for data storage and its potential impact on network resilience and decentralization.

Szilágyi pointed out a notable disparity among Ethereum clients, highlighting that while Geth retains old chain segments, many other clients choose to aggressively delete them, believing them to be redundant. While optimizing storage in the short term may appear beneficial, Szilágyi cautioned against the risks associated with widespread data deletion. He stressed the irreversible nature of data loss and the challenges of recovering discarded information, cautioning that as more nodes discard data, finding willing participants to store and serve it becomes increasingly challenging.

The issue of Ethereum client dependency has been a contentious topic within the community for some time. Current data from Ethernodes indicates that over 40% of Ethereum clients rely on Geth, with nearly 38% utilizing Nethermind, another software client in the Ethereum ecosystem. This concentration of reliance on Geth has raised concerns about network centralization and prompted initiatives by major crypto firms like Coinbase to investigate alternative Ethereum execution clients to diversify their infrastructure.
