The upcoming European Union Parliamentary Elections, scheduled for next week, could significantly influence the future of cryptocurrency regulation within the EU market, according to Jag Kooner, Head of Derivatives at Bitfinex.

"A right-wing shift could lead to stricter crypto controls, while a pro-crypto outcome might accelerate supportive regulations like MiCA," Kooner stated in an interview with The Block. He emphasized that the outcome of these elections will be closely monitored by investors seeking regulatory clarity, which could have a substantial impact on the broader crypto market throughout June and beyond.

Kooner highlighted the pivotal role of the elections in shaping the bloc's legislative approach, particularly concerning the implementation of the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework. MiCA aims to establish a unified regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies across the EU, offering legal clarity and potentially attracting increased investment. "The upcoming elections are crucial for the implementation of the MiCA regulation," Kooner noted. "The outcome will determine the pace and enthusiasm with which these regulations are executed."

The 2024 European Parliament election, taking place from June 6 to June 9, marks the tenth parliamentary election since the first direct elections in 1979 and the first European Parliament election since Brexit. This election coincides with several other national elections within various EU member states.

The political landscape resulting from the elections could either bolster or hinder the progress of MiCA and other supportive regulatory policies, depending on the balance of power between populist and pro-crypto factions within the new parliament.

Additionally, the dynamics of bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) within Europe provide a gauge of the region's appetite for crypto assets. According to data from Morningstar reported by the Financial Times, European bitcoin ETPs have experienced outflows every month this year, totaling $506 million since the beginning of the year. Despite this, the price of bitcoin has surged by approximately 40% during the same period, largely driven by inflows into U.S.-based spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

As of the end of April, European bitcoin ETPs managed assets worth around $6.4 billion, significantly lower than the $53.5 billion managed by U.S. funds, as per the FT report. This disparity underscores the potential impact of regulatory developments in the EU on the attractiveness and growth of crypto investments.

The results of the European Parliamentary Elections will thus be crucial in determining the future regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies in the EU, with potential implications for global crypto markets.
