In recent 13F filings, it has been revealed that BNP Paribas, the second largest European bank, has initiated its Bitcoin journey by acquiring exposure to Bitcoin through a spot ETF based in the United States. The filings submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) demonstrate that BNP Paribas has invested in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT).

Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States have witnessed remarkable success since their launch earlier in the year, surpassing a cumulative volume of $200 billion. As per regulatory requirements, institutional investors managing assets exceeding $100 million are mandated to disclose their quarterly holdings through 13F filings. The debut of Bitcoin ETFs generated substantial anticipation among investors, eager to identify which institutions were embracing these investment vehicles.

Prior 13F filings for the first quarter of 2024 unveiled acquisitions made by asset managers, family offices, and financial institutions such as Park Avenue Securities, Inscription Capital, Wedbush Private Capital, and American National Bank. Now, BNP Paribas, boasting assets under management surpassing $600 billion, has entered the scene. Although BNP's investment in IBIT amounts to approximately $40,000, its participation marks a notable development, signaling the involvement of one of Europe's largest banks in the Bitcoin ecosystem through an ETF.

Analysts speculate that forthcoming 13F filings leading up to the May 15 deadline may unveil significantly greater institutional involvement in spot Bitcoin ETFs.
