Ryan Salame, a former executive at the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is facing a sentencing hearing on May 28 after pleading guilty to his role in the company's collapse. His lawyers have requested an 18-month prison sentence, citing their client's operational role and lack of direct involvement in fraudulent activities.

Salame's attorneys argue that he was more focused on managing customer fiat conversions, political contributions, and charitable initiatives, rather than being involved in the fraudulent schemes orchestrated by FTX's core leaders. They emphasize that Salame was unaware of the conspiracy to deceive and steal from customers and did not engage in any fraudulent activities himself.

As part of his cooperation with US authorities, Salame has agreed to pay fines totaling $11 million and forfeit assets, including two homes and a luxury car. His lawyers highlight his remorse and efforts to address substance abuse issues, as well as the financial losses he incurred due to FTX's collapse.

The requested sentence is significantly lower than the maximum 10-year prison term Salame faces.
