Hong Kong's dream of becoming a crypto hub just hit a snag. OKX, a major crypto exchange, has decided to withdraw its application for a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license and cease trading services for Hong Kong residents.

This move follows similar withdrawals by other big names like HKVAEX (Gate.io's affiliate) and Huobi HK. While OKX remained tight-lipped about the specific reasons, citing only "careful consideration" of its business strategy, the timing suggests a disconnect between the exchange's plans and Hong Kong's evolving regulations.

The Crypto Catch-22

In December 2022, Hong Kong implemented a licensing regime for crypto service providers, aiming to legitimize the industry while tightening its grip. The new rules, kicking in by June 2023, required all regional exchanges to obtain operational licenses. Those failing to comply faced a May 31, 2024 deadline to shut down shop.

OKX, initially keen on participating, submitted its VASP application in November 2023. However, something seems to have changed their course.

The Parting of Ways

The exchange assures its Hong Kong users that their funds are safe. However, a strict deadline looms. Customers have until August 31st to withdraw their assets to self-custody wallets or other platforms. After that, any remaining funds could be considered "unclaimed property" by OKX.

The exchange recently secured a VASP license in Dubai and expanded its reach to Turkey and Australia.
