A recent survey conducted by Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy Digital, has unveiled misconceptions within the Ethereum community regarding the security of the blockchain's economy. The survey asked participants to evaluate the security threshold of ETH staked for protecting the blockchain, revealing a lack of understanding about the risks of a potential attack.

The survey respondents had varying beliefs about the security of Ethereum:

- 44.9% believed that securing Ethereum required 100% of all ETH staked, equal to $110 billion, 31.4 million ETH.

- 20.4% thought that 66.6% of staked ETH, worth $73.4 billion, 20.9 million ETH, was sufficient.

- 34.7% felt that only 33.3% of staked ETH, or $36.7 billion, 10.4 million ETH, was needed for security.

Christine Kim highlighted the vulnerabilities of Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism, emphasizing that an attack can occur with just 33% of ETH staked. The network's ability to penalize stakers by burning their locked value is crucial for security.

The Ethereum Foundation further explained these vulnerabilities, detailing scenarios of potential attacks involving different percentages of the total stake. Attacks with higher levels of controlled staking pose risks such as sustained chain splits and transaction manipulation.
