Corbin Keegan, a U.S. national who proudly dubbed himself as the inaugural citizen of Bitcoin City, has decided to temporarily depart from El Salvador after enduring over two years of anticipation for the city's development. The concept of Bitcoin City was initially introduced by President Nayib Bukele in November 2021. It was envisioned as a groundbreaking settlement to be funded through the issuance of volcano bonds, a prospect that is yet to materialize.

The news of Keegan's departure underscores the lingering uncertainty surrounding the construction of Bitcoin City, leaving at least one eager resident in limbo. Keegan, who had eagerly relocated from Chicago to be part of the pioneering community, has returned to the U.S. temporarily after enduring a prolonged wait for updates on the city's progress. Reports from local media indicate that Keegan resided in a makeshift home near the proposed city site in La Union, eagerly awaiting the realization of the ambitious project.

Identifying himself as a devoted Bitcoin enthusiast, Keegan's journey began in El Zonte, a region known for its vibrant Bitcoin community. However, upon learning about the prospect of Bitcoin City, he felt compelled to reside in close proximity to potentially become its first inhabitant.

Despite the initial enthusiasm surrounding the announcement, details regarding Bitcoin City have remained scarce. President Bukele mentioned in January 2022 that El Salvador was actively securing the necessary geothermal energy to power the city. However, by April 2023, the Ministry of Public Works disclosed that no official project under the name of Bitcoin City had been registered, suggesting that the development might still be in its informal planning stages.

The issuance of the much-anticipated Volcano Bonds, crucial for financing Bitcoin City's construction, was initially slated for Q1 2024 following regulatory approval. However, as of now, these bonds have yet to be issued, contributing to the prolonged delay in the project's realization.

Despite his temporary departure, Keegan's landlord, Maria Antonio, remains optimistic about his return to El Salvador in December, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to witness the eventual construction of Bitcoin City.
