In a significant legal development involving cryptocurrency, Remy St. Felix, a 24-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, was recently convicted by a federal jury in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was found guilty of organizing a series of violent home invasions targeting crypto owners in several states, including North Carolina, Florida, Texas, and New York.

This case highlights a disturbing trend where individuals holding digital assets are directly attacked in their homes, underscoring the growing intersection of conventional crime with the cryptocurrency market.

The trial revealed that St. Felix faced multiple charges, including conspiracy, kidnapping, and Hobbs Act robbery. He was convicted for forcibly extracting cryptocurrency from his victims through extreme measures, including physical violence and intimidation. In one instance detailed during the trial in April 2023, St. Felix and an accomplice invaded a victim's home, assaulted them, restrained them with zip ties, and threatened them at gunpoint. During the ordeal, other collaborators transferred over $150,000 in cryptocurrency from the victim's account.

US Attorney Sandra J. Hairston for the Middle District of North Carolina condemned the actions, emphasizing the trauma inflicted upon the victims. The successful conviction of St. Felix was the result of an extensive investigation led by the FBI's Charlotte Field Office, with cooperation from various other law enforcement agencies.

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri from the Justice Department's Criminal Division noted that despite the use of encrypted communications and anonymous financial transactions by St. Felix and his associates, investigators employed advanced forensic techniques to uncover their criminal activities.
