Socket recently issued an official statement addressing a security incident, revealing that the protocol fell victim to a $3.3 million attack. The tweet from Socket assured users that the team has identified the issue and paused the affected contracts, requiring no further action from users.

Reports indicate that the attack affected 231 wallets, resulting in an average loss of $14,000 per wallet. The stolen assets included popular cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, Dai, Wrapped Ether, Polygon, and Wrapped Bitcoin, with detailed figures provided for each.

PeckShield first reported the incident to Socket, noting that the malicious route used in the attack was added just three days prior and has since been disabled. The attack exploited incomplete validation of user input, allowing funds to be fetched from accounts that had approved a vulnerable SocketGateway contract.

A specific account has been identified as the catalyst for the attack, utilizing the mainnet while users were advised to revoke every address for security.

Socket functions as an interoperability protocol facilitating seamless connectivity across blockchains. It supports Bungee, a bridge aggregator enabling users to discover optimal bridging routes. Bungee utilizes Socket to identify multiple routes through supported bridges and DEXs, considering all necessary swaps before and after the bridging process.
