The bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX has unveiled a plan to fully repay all of its creditors, with a substantial portion set to receive more than their initial claims. This proposal represents a significant departure from the exchange's previous strategy, which aimed to reimburse creditors based on the value of their assets at the time of FTX's bankruptcy in November 2022.

The proposed plan, which is subject to finalization and approval by a Delaware Bankruptcy Court, outlines a comprehensive repayment strategy. According to FTX, 98% of creditors will receive up to 118% of their allowed claims, while the remaining 2% will not only be fully reimbursed but will also receive "billions in compensation for the time value of their investments."

John J. Ray III, the current CEO and chief restructuring officer of FTX, expressed satisfaction with the plan, stating, "We are pleased to be in a position to propose a Chapter 11 plan that contemplates the return of 100% of bankruptcy claim amounts plus interest for non-governmental creditors."

The decision to revise the repayment strategy was influenced by the remarkable resurgence of the cryptocurrency markets since FTX's bankruptcy. Notably, the price of Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has surged by over 200% during this period, significantly increasing the value of the assets held by FTX.

FTX has estimated that the total value of property collected and converted into cash for distribution to creditors will range between $14.5 billion and $16.3 billion. This substantial sum is expected to facilitate the proposed repayment plan, providing creditors with a level of compensation that was previously deemed improbable.

However, it is important to note that the eligibility criteria for the 118% recovery are specific. Only creditors holding claims in an allowed amount below $50,000 will qualify for this enhanced repayment. If the bankruptcy court approves the plan, eligible creditors can expect to receive their respective payments within 60 days of the plan's effective date.

The collapse of FTX, once one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume, sent shockwaves throughout the industry. The $32 billion exchange's downfall revealed an $8 billion hole, which its new management has been diligently attempting to recover in the years following the bankruptcy filing.

Among the efforts undertaken by FTX to recoup funds is the $884 million sale of its shares in the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic in March, which accounted for a majority of FTX's stake in the company. Additionally, FTX has confirmed that its restructuring plans do not include a reboot of the cryptocurrency exchange itself, indicating a shift in focus toward addressing creditor claims.
