Gone are the days of physically storing gold bars. With HSBC's new service, accessible through online banking and their mobile app, investors can purchase gold represented by secure digital tokens. These tokens, powered by HSBC's in-house Orion platform, essentially function as digital certificates of ownership for real gold held by the bank.

HSBC's Orion platform is a game-changer. Previously used for institutional products like digital bonds and tokenized gold for high-rollers, Orion is now enabling everyday investors to participate in the gold market with greater ease and potentially lower barriers to entry.

"We're thrilled to be at the forefront of innovation," says HSBC's Maggie Ng. "The HSBC Gold Token, powered by Orion, is the first retail product in Hong Kong to leverage blockchain technology, authorized by the Securities and Futures Commission." This move acknowledges the growing interest in digital assets while capitalizing on the existing comfort many investors have with gold as a stable investment.

The concept behind HSBC's Gold Token is known as tokenization. It essentially involves creating digital representations of real-world assets, like gold, on a secure and transparent system called a blockchain. Major institutions like Boston Consulting Group predict the value of tokenized assets to reach a whopping $16 trillion within the next decade.
