One notable instance involved a user query seeking advice on keeping cheese on pizza, to which the AI system purportedly suggested using glue—a response that raised eyebrows for its absurdity. Similarly, users were reportedly misled when the system claimed that at least two dogs owned hotels, supported by a nonexistent dog statue as evidence.

While some of these inaccuracies may seem trivial, the underlying concern lies in the confidence with which the consumer-facing model delivers both accurate and inaccurate results. Google's response, as conveyed by company representative Meghann Farnsworth, has been reactive, involving the removal of queries triggering inaccurate results as they arise. This approach has led to comparisons to playing metaphorical whack-a-mole with AI issues.

Adding to the confusion, Google appears to shift blame onto users, suggesting that many inaccurate examples stem from "uncommon queries" or manipulated queries that the company couldn't replicate. In the midst of this controversy, rival AI figure Elon Musk, founder of xAI, has expressed confidence in the advancement of AI technology. Musk predicts that machines, including those developed by xAI, could surpass human capabilities as soon as 2025—a notion he reiterated during the VivaTech 2024 event in Paris. While Google grapples with refining its AI capabilities, Musk remains optimistic about the potential of AI development, aiming for xAI to compete with industry giants like OpenAI and DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google.
